The United Nations climate change Conference of the Parties (COP-27) on Monday appointed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as the vice-chair of the conference.

Pakistan has received this honour out of 195 UN member states for voicing climate change issues at global and regional forums.

PM Shehbaz was invited by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to co-chair the COP-27 meeting. The prime minister will jointly chair the conference with his Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Støre and President El-Sisi. It is being held in Egypt’s Sharm-el-Sheikh from November 6-8.

Following the climate catastrophe in Pakistan, PM Shehbaz raised the issue at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of States meeting and the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Doreen Bogdan-Martin was elected on Thursday as the first woman to lead the UN’s telecom agency in its 157-year history, with the US contender beating a Russian rival to the post.

Bogdan-Martin will become the next secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union, which plays an important global role in setting the technical standards underlying mobile phones, television and the internet.

A new $3 billion railway is to link Oman’s Sohar port with Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, officials said on Wednesday.

The 303-kilometre (188 miles) railway, with passenger trains travelling up to 200 kilometres per hour, will join up with the UAE’s national network that is now under construction. The joint venture between Oman Rail and the UAE’s Etihad Rail was agreed during a visit by UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed to the Omani capital Muscat.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed decrees on Sept. 30 to annex four regions of Ukraine. In a grand ceremony in the Kremlin, he said Russia would formally incorporate Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions — and that the people living there would “be our citizens forever.”

In a major development, President Arif Alvi Sunday approved the appointment of MQM-P’s Kamran Tessori as Governor of Sindh.

The post was lying vacant after the resignation of PTI’s Imran Ismail on April 11. Following the dismissal of Imran Khan as prime minister after losing a no-confidence vote in parliament, then Sindh governor Imran Ismail announced his resignation, saying that he cannot say “sir” to Shahbaz Sharif.

President Arif Alvi appointed Tessori as Sindh governor on the advice of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif under Article 101.
